This webinar took place on August 21, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PT.

A growing concern in California is how to prevent unnecessary conservatorships and abuse. One effective tool for this is through thoughtful advance planning. Advance planning can provide an alternative to conservatorship for older adults and ensure that their rights and wishes are respected throughout their lives and in death.

This webinar, Using Advance Planning to Avoid Unnecessary Conservatorships, will provide advocates with an overview of common advance planning tools, including powers of attorney and advance health care directives, and discuss how these tools can help older adult clients. This training will also discuss how advocates can include advance planning cases in their organization’s practice.

Legal aid attorneys and advocates play an important role in helping older adults understand the various types of advance planning tools, which tools are best for their circumstances, and how to choose trusted supporters. Careful planning can assist older adult clients as they age and protect against the imposition of a conservatorship.
