We are deeply disturbed by the Trump administration’s plans to strip immigrants who have been legally permitted to work of their Social Security numbers by placing them on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) Master Death File.
This is a gross misuse of agency resources to target, harass, and harm immigrants living in the United States. It also weakens the Social Security Trust Fund by preventing those who are working from paying Social Security taxes. It is an abuse of power that goes against the values of our country. The consequences for people placed in this file will be devastating – people will be cut off from critical essentials, including Social Security benefits, health care, employment, banking, and much more. Both those who are targeted and those who are erroneously swept up by this overreach will suffer immensely.
No one living or working in this country with a valid Social Security number should be erased from a system meant to serve them. This unprecedented move is a threat to us all. We all deserve a Social Security program that is reliable and trustworthy. We urge you to contact your members of Congress immediately and demand that they stop SSA from abusing the Social Security system and protect the public from this threat.
