Kate joined Justice in Aging in 2012 and focuses on improving access to Supplemental Security Income and Social Security benefits for older adults at the Social Security Administration. She provides extensive training and case consultation support to aging service providers and legal advocates on all types of SSA benefits.
Kate has witnessed the fundamental importance of SSA benefits as an economic support for low-income older adults, and strives to demystify the complex rules and restrictions that block those who rely on these benefits from accessing them. She seeks to remove barriers that prevent older adults from accessing the income they need to thrive.
Kate received her B.A. from Oberlin College and her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law. Kate started her legal career with Legal Services of Northern California and Maryland Legal Aid. She also worked as an attorney in Washington, DC at the National Legal Aid and Defender Association, Bread for the City, and Doherty, Cella, Keane and Associates, LLP. Prior to becoming an attorney, Kate taught English to speakers of other languages.
Kate lives in Silver Spring, MD with her husband and their teenager. In her free time, she enjoys listening to audiobooks, knitting, and traveling.
