On June 30, 2022, Governor Newsom signed the final 2022-23 state budget and accompanying budget trailer bills.

This year’s budget includes spending of over $300 billion, including almost $100 billion in surplus. This robust state budget provides an opportunity to advance the goals in California’s Master Plan for Aging—especially in light of the ongoing pandemic, which continues to disproportionately impact older adults and communities of color.

The budget takes action on a number of items that we were watching closely and that we had identified as particularly important to advancing equity and addressing the high rates of senior poverty in California, including reforming the Medi-Cal Share of Cost program and fully reinstating the SSI/SSP grants.
