Justice in Aging condemns the Senate’s passage of the budget reconciliation bill, which would cut health care and nutrition assistance that older adults, people with disabilities, and their families rely on daily—all to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.

The Senate ignored the widespread opposition to the legislation passed by the House of Representatives, and voted to make even more severe cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act—amounting to over $1 trillion in cuts to health care funding and 17 million people becoming uninsured. These harmful cuts will cause deep and lasting hardship, forcing many older adults to forgo necessary care, face preventable crises, and endure unnecessary suffering—and even death.

“This bill is a staggering betrayal of our nation’s older adults that will send millions already struggling to meet their basic needs further into poverty,” declared Justice in Aging’s Executive Director, Kevin Prindiville. “It would strip health care coverage from millions of low-income people, shutter nursing facilities, and erase generations of progress in expanding access to care so that older adults and people with disabilities can live in their homes and communities.”

“Our collective advocacy is making a difference, and the fight is not over. We must continue to do everything we can to stop this dangerous and deeply unpopular bill from becoming law. We call on members of the House to listen to their constituents and reject it.”
As the House of Representatives takes up the bill again, we urge you to join us in this fight to protect Medicaid and SNAP by calling your lawmakers at 202-224-3121 and sharing our resources.
