California is one of the largest and most populous states in the nation with a large number of older adults living in poverty or near poverty. The state has shown a commitment to improving the lives of its millions of low-income older adults through innovative policies and the implementation of a Master Plan for Aging.

Justice in Aging partners closely with state leaders and other advocates to enact policy changes that make California a better place to age and shares strategies with states nationwide to identify opportunities and implement similar changes in their own states.

Our advocacy has improved integration for those dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, improved the state’s In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program, increased the number of older adults who can qualify for Medicaid by raising the income limit and eliminating the asset limit, and expanded and improved Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Justice in Aging staff members are leading and participating in various subcommittees charged with shaping and implementing the state’s Master Plan for Aging.
