Elder abuse is a prevalent problem throughout our communities. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical or sexual abuse, isolation, abandonment, financial abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and mental suffering. Numerous systems and agencies are tasked with addressing the harmful effects of elder mistreatment, including civil legal aid organizations.

Legal aid attorneys have many tools to prevent abuse, protect clients from ongoing abuse, and help clients recover after abuse. One tool that legal aid attorneys can use to protect older adults from abuse is filing Elder Abuse Restraining Orders. This webinar, Basics of California Elder Abuse Restraining Orders and Recent Updates, will equip California advocates with introductory knowledge of the legal standards and procedure for obtaining an elder abuse restraining order for their clients and will cover recent updates to the law.

This training will address:

  • Elements and dynamics of elder abuse and the role of civil legal aid
  • California’s process and standards for obtaining an Elder Abuse Restraining Order
  • An overview of Assembly Bill 1243 and recent legal changes

Presenters:
Lauren Carden, Director of California Elder Rights, Justice in Aging
