Today, the House of Representatives passed a new budget resolution that calls for cutting trillions from Medicaid, SNAP, and other essential programs that older adults rely on to meet their daily needs. With the Senate already having approved the budget blueprint, the House’s vote paves the way for lawmakers to draft legislation to implement these unprecedented cuts to health care and food assistance for millions of people across America—all to finance tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations and immigration enforcement.

“For months, the message to lawmakers across the country has been clear: reject cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. With this vote, Congress ignored their constituents and chose billionaires. They are prioritizing tax breaks for the wealthy and making the people they were elected to serve pay for them by stripping health care and food assistance from older adults, disabled people, and millions more,” said Kevin Prindiville, Executive Director of Justice in Aging.

“But we are not done fighting. Every day is an opportunity to remind lawmakers that we are counting on them to do right by seniors and reject cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. We will continue to tell stories that show older adults, people with disabilities, their caregivers, and families deserve access to vital health and long-term care. Together, we can protect Medicaid and SNAP and ensure this harmful budget does not become law.”
